Question 461: To ask the Minister for Education and Science her views on the re-routing of a school bus (details supplied) in County Donegal, which would bring four families closer to the collection point and also reduce the travel time of the bus; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Bus Éireann which operates the School Transport Scheme, on behalf of my Department, are responsible for the planning and timetabling of school transport services.
In general, primary school transport routes are planned so that, as far as possible, no eligible pupil will have more than 2.4 kilometres to travel to a pick up point. The family referred to by the Deputy reside 0.2 kilometres from the pick-up point of the existing service.
Bus Éireann has advised my Department that an extension to the existing service is not feasible due to operational reasons.
