Question 120: To ask the Minister for Health and Children if it is proposed to close private cancer facilities that do not have the throughput of patients and standard of assessment and care that is considered necessary under the National Cancer Strategy; and if she will make a statement on the matter. In line with the National Cancer Control Strategy, I would expect that cancer services will only be provided in centres that meet minimum standards, such as the recently approved National Quality Assurance Standards for Symptomatic Breast Disease Services, irrespective of whether these centres are publicly or privately financed and managed. I have called on hospitals in the independent sector to take steps to ensure that their breast cancer services comply with these Standards and I have brought the Standards to the attention of private health care insurers.
