Question 160: To ask the Minister for Education and Science the number of primary school teachers that are employed and paid for by her Department; the amount she expects to retire at the end of this academic year; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26854/07]

The most recent public service figures for September 2007 indicated that there were to the order of 29,720 teaching posts in primary schools.

It is expected that circa 650 primary teachers will retire during or at the end of the current academic year.
