Question 624: To ask the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources if he has received representations from the Italian based environmental organisation, OPEN, asking that he would support the inclusion in the new EU Treaty, an article that would include the objectives of the Trans-European Network on Renewable Energy Sources in regard to the reduction of greenhouse gas levels; his views on the request; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I understand that representations were received by An Taoiseach from OPEN, requesting support for the inclusion of an Article in the new EU treaty, in relation to a Trans European Network on Renewable Energy Sources. The existing programme run by the European Commission for Trans-European Networks in Energy (TENS-E) makes provision for feasibility studies for energy networks with a cross-border component in both electricity and gas. In the electricity sector, the networks are technology neutral, and so their support is of equal benefit to renewable energy as any other generation technology.
