Question 48: To ask the Minister for Transport the position regarding the European Commission's investigation of payments and grants awarded to Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann to determine if they are compatible with the EU state aid rules; if he anticipates that this investigation will instigate a change in Government policy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The European Commission informed my Department in July 2007 that, as a result of a complaint received by them, it had decided to initiate a formal investigation into whether the Exchequer capital and current funding provided to CIÉ contravenes European Union law. My Department is currently preparing its response to the considerations raised by the Commission and a reply will be issued very shortly. Any change in Government policy will depend on the outcome of the investigation.
