Question 184: To ask the Minister for Education and Science the reason a child (details supplied) along with five other small infant pupils have to share three special needs assistants between them; if she will ensure that adequate special needs assistance is provided to the child in question and to the other pupils; if she will review this inequality; and if she will make a statement on the matter. As the Deputy will be aware, the National Council for Special Education is responsible, through its network of local Special Educational Needs Organisers, for allocating resource teachers and special needs assistants to schools to support children with special needs. I have arranged for the details supplied by the Deputy to be forwarded to the NCSE for their attention and direct reply. I would point out however that it would not be unusual for a special needs assistant to be assigned to more than one pupil depending on the assessed needs of the pupils in question.

All schools have the names and contact details of their local SENO. Parents may also contact their local SENO directly to discuss their child's special educational needs, using the contact details available on www.ncse.ie.
