Question 564: To ask the Minister for Education and Science her plans to change the situation whereby a national school must maintain numbers of 80 pupils or more for over 12 months before an additional teacher is appointed; if her attention has been drawn to the difficulty this causes with class sizes; if she will reconsider this restriction; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The mainstream staffing of a primary school is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school on 30th September of the previous school year. The actual number of mainstream posts sanctioned is determined by reference to a staffing schedule which is issued to all primary schools each year. My Department has no plans to change this arrangement.
