Question 252: To ask the Minister for Education and Science the number of buses used in the school bus fleet; the number of these that are publicly owned; if the drivers of the publicly owned buses are employed full time; if so, their terms of employment; if these buses are under utilised; and if she will make a statement on the matter. In the region of 3,600 vehicles are used to transport children to primary and post-primary schools each day under the school transport scheme. About 700 of these vehicles are used by Bus Éireann. To ensure that school buses are utilised as fully as possible Bus Éireann design the network so that the majority of school buses are coordinated to operate more than one bus trip, each morning and afternoon, providing separate primary and post primary school bus services. Bus Éireann school bus drivers are paid an hourly rate for the actual hours worked, which varies from driver to driver.
