The Road Traffic (Lighting of Vehicles) Regulations 1963-2006 provide for the use of lighting on vehicles, including the use of headlights, dipped headlights, front and rear fog lights and indicator lights. Enforcement of all Road Traffic Regulations is a matter for An Garda Síochána. The Road Traffic Act 2002, which provides the legislative basis for the penalty points system, identifies 69 offences to which the system applies. All of these are directly related to road safety.

Since 13 September 2006, as a consequence of the Road Safety Authority Act 2006 (Conferral of Functions) Order 2006, responsibility for matters relating to vehicle standards, including the lighting of vehicles, has passed to the Road Safety Authority.
