Question 14: To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when, in view of the Government's decision to sign the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on 30 March 2007, the Government will ratify the Convention in order that it can enter into force; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am delighted that Ireland was in the first group of countries to sign the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities when it opened for signature in New York on last Friday, 30th March. This UN Convention is a significant human rights convention and represents an important advance for people with disabilities.

In conjunction with its recent approval of my proposal for signature by the State of the Convention, the Government approved the establishment of an implementation group to advise on any changes to the Government's Disability Strategy that may be required to enable the State ratify the Convention. The Implementation Group will consult with representatives of people with disabilities as it carries out its work.
