Question 985: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if he has received a request for extra funding from Kildare County Council for the reinstatement of the various road networks throughout the county with particular reference to those areas incurring heavy vehicular traffic; if he will make an emergency allocation to address these issues; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The improvement and maintenance of non-national roads in County Kildare is a matter for Kildare County Council to be funded from its own resources supplemented by State grants provided by my Department. In 2007, the total grant allocation by my Department to Kildare County Council for improvement and maintenance works on non-national roads is €23,531,054. While my Department maintains regular ongoing contact with local authorities on the delivery of the non-national roads programme, I am satisfied that this significant level of State funding, supplemented by Kildare County Council's own resources, provides appropriately for the Council's ongoing non-national road requirements in 2007. Responsibility for national roads in County Kildare is a matter for Kildare County Council and the National Roads Authority which operates under the aegis of my colleague the Minister for Transport.
