Question 824: To ask the Minister for Education and Science if her attention has been drawn to the circumstances of a person (details supplied) in County Sligo; if she will intervene with her Department officials on this person's behalf who is at the top of the mild learning disability range and sanction home tuition as a matter of urgency in view of the fact that they will not pass their junior certificate which they will need for future apprentice or FÁS courses as they will be an early school leaver; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The home tuition scheme provides funding to parents to facilitate the provision of education at home for children who, for a number of reasons such as chronic illness, are unable to attend school. The scheme was extended in recent years to facilitate tuition for children awaiting a suitable educational placement and also to provide early intervention for pre-school children with autism.

I am pleased to advise the Deputy that my Department has recently sanctioned home tuition for the pupil in question and a letter to this effect has issued to the family.
