Question 278: To ask the Minister for Finance if he will directly or through Kildare County Council address the issue of the retaining wall at Captain's Hill, Leixlip, County Kildare built in compliance with conditions set out through the Planning and Development Act 2000 and now the cause of flooding and a potential danger to nearby residents in Dún Carraig; if he will take appropriate action to address the issue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Office of Public Works and Kildare County Council have agreed a programme of works to alleviate flooding on the Silleachain River at Mill Lane and on the Rye River including the Dún Carraig estate. The outline design for these proposals is currently being considered for planning approval in accordance with Part 8 of the planning and development regulations and it is envisaged that subject to approval, agreement by all affected parties and adherence to a tight framework, construction will commence on flood alleviation measures for the Leixlip area in early summer of this year.

I am advised that the retaining wall at Captain's Hill, while it may be contributing to surface water drainage problems in the area is not a factor in flooding from the Rye River, which the proposed works are intended to address.
