In 2005, I introduced a special grant for the provision and improvement of footpaths in town council areas which were former town commissioners. These grants are paid to the county council which is the road authority for the area. The grants fund two-thirds of the cost of works, with county councils providing the balance. Roscommon County Council submitted 4 schemes in the Boyle Town Council area for consideration for funding in 2007, at a total cost of €136,455. The Council received a grant of €11,550 this year, representing two-thirds of the total cost of the first scheme prioritised by Boyle Town Council, for the provision of a new footpath at Plunkett Avenue.
