General leave arrangements are a matter for boards of management of schools to decide, within limits agreed under the conciliation scheme for teachers or as provided for by statute. There is no provision for leave with pay for the absence in this case. All unpaid leave is non-pensionable as no pay issues and therefore no pension contributions are paid. However, under the terms of Circular letter 129/2006, which revises the scheme providing for the purchase of notional service for superannuation purposes, the person in question may have the option to purchase any shortfall in pensionable service subject to a maximum of 40 years in total. If contact is made with the Pensions Section of my Department, a quotation for the purchase of this service will be provided.
