Question 216: To ask the Minister for Transport further to Parliamentary Question No. 314 of 13 December 2005 and bearing in mind that there are no two-dimensional public safety zones whatsoever at Changi Airport, Singapore that handled over 32 million passengers in 2005, if his Department approved of the designation of a 3,000 metre long red zone at Waterford Airport that by comparison handled a 74,357 passengers in the same year; his views on whether this latter red zone is totally unnecessary if not bizarre from a safety perspective and is a classic example of regulatory capture; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As I stated in a response to a previous Question my Department did not issue recommendations relating to a red zone at Waterford Airport.
The question of red zones at regional airports is a matter for the owners and operators of the airports in conjunction with the relevant local planning authorities.
