Question 294: To ask the Minister for Finance if he will reconsider a decision in connection with the Office of Public Works having a policy whereby flood relief is not provided wholly for agricultural purposes only; and if he will re-examine its policy in view of the needs of farmers who have difficulties in relation to flooding; and if he will examine a request from a farmer (details supplied) in County Limerick where the OPW have stated they do not intend to carry out any works; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I recently announced that the Commissioners of Public Works would work with Local Authorities to try to address flooding that has resulted in damage to homes or other premises, including farming enterprises, subject to certain criteria. Any approach for flood mitigation works that would meet these criteria will be considered.

In the specific case referred to by the Deputy, the relevant channel has been maintained to its design level by the Commissioners. However, it has been found that some land flooding has persisted. The Commissioners will therefore carry out works to the channel this year to address this problem, provided any necessary consents can be obtained from other landowners and subject to there being no unacceptable environmental impacts.
