Question 167: To ask the Minister for Health and Children if her attention has been drawn to the fact that since May 2006 her Department no longer recognises the British medical qualification BLAB; the reasons for this policy change; if her attention has been drawn to the number of qualified doctors who have obtained this certification in the UK and are awaiting recognition from the Irish Medical Council; if she will review the matter with a view to reinstating the BLAB recognition; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Under the Medical Practitioners Act 1978, the Medical Council is the statutory body charged with responsibility for the registration and regulation of medical practitioners. My Department has no role in relation to the matter and I have no role in reviewing the decision of the Medical Council.

I have therefore requested the Medical Council to respond directly to the Deputy on the matter.
