Question 148: To ask the Minister for Education and Science if an investigation has been carried out on the failure of the CAO computer system to cope with the volume of applications in the past few days before the deadline for receipt of applications; the plans there are to ensure that such problems do not arise again; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The Central Applications Office (CAO) is a private company limited by guarantee which processes applications centrally on behalf of third level institutions. My Department does not have any function in relation to the operational arrangements of the CAO. However, I have made my concerns known to the CAO in relation to the difficulties it experienced with its computer facilities and the need to ensure that this does not recur in the future.
