Question 356: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government further to his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 1870 of 31 January 2007, if his attention has been drawn to the difficulties experienced by local authorities in regulating heavily pot-holed and poorly maintained shop fronts and landings at long established shops where the footpaths are not in public ownership; the powers he proposes to extend to local authorities to allow them to deal with the safety and other issues that arise for the public at such shops; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am satisfied that local authorities have sufficient powers at their disposal, including under planning and roads legislation, to deal with issues of the kind mentioned in the Question. Solutions to particular problems of this kind will also be appropriately addressed at local level. Further specific regulation of such issues is not envisaged at present.
