Question 109: To ask the Minister for Finance the way excess deductions from people by a computing error in the Revenue Commissioners came to occur; the checks in the system to prevent same; the reason they failed; the role the financial institutions played in the incident; if there are lessons to be learnt there; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the excess deductions were in fact due to human error rather than a computing error and the financial institutions played no role in the incident. Revised procedural and communication arrangements have been put in place by Revenue to prevent such a recurrence.

I am further advised by Revenue that the work in refunding the amounts deducted in error has been completed. Customers who incurred the excess deductions are being asked to supply Revenue with details of any charges or penalties suffered as a result of the excess deductions so that Revenue can make good those costs and deal with the matter of interest on the excess deductions.
