Question 167: To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the fact that inspections for public service vehicle licences can take up to six months from time of application in County Waterford; his views on whether this is causing great difficulty for bus operators in County Waterford who wish to submit an application to the Department of Transport for a passenger licence; if he will hold discussions with Garda management with a view to securing additional resources to carry out inspections in respect of PSV licences in County Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am informed by the Garda authorities that the general timeframe for inspections of large PSV vehicles is between 4 to 6 weeks from the time of receipt of application. Delays in Waterford County only arise if certain matters require further attention as a result of the initial inspection.

I am also informed that once the inspection has been completed and matters are in order the licence is issued forthwith.

I am further informed that this timeframe should not cause difficulty for bus operators in County Waterford who wish to submit an application to the Department of Transport for a passenger licence. Garda management is satisfied that there are currently enough resources allocated to this particular area.
