Question 393: To ask the Minister for Education and Science the reason adult literacy classes for a group of intellectually disabled adults (details supplied) have stopped; her proposals to recommence these classes; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [39332/06]

The Adult Literacy services are administered locally by vocational education committees with funding provided by my Department. A grant is paid annually for this purpose and VECs have complete discretion in distributing literacy funds, deciding on the nature and extent of the service to be provided and the manner in which literacy funds should be spent, subject to adherence to the overall literacy budget.

The issue raised in the question is, therefore, a matter for Co. Kerry VEC in the first instance.
