Question 322: To ask the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism if, in view of the fact that there was excessive radon levels in a third of schools here, his Department has plans or carried out tests for excessive radon levels in buildings under the control of or used by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. A radon survey was carried out at my Department's Dublin premises, 23 Kildare Street, Dublin 2 and Frederick Building, South Frederick Street, Dublin 2, during the first quarter of 2005. All results were within normal parameters and no follow up action was recommended by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland. A survey has not yet been conducted in the National Archives, Bishop Street, Dublin 8, which is part of my Department, but the matter is currently under consideration. My Department opened temporary, decentralised premises in Fossa, Co. Kerry on 4 September 2006. A radon survey has not yet been conducted in these premises but it is proposed to commence one before the end of the year. Fossa is not located in a "high radon area" as designated by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland.
