The Alternative Energy Requirement support programme concentrated on increasing the contribution from renewable energy sources to the electricity market. The contribution by renewable energy sources to gross electricity consumption was 5.2% in 2004, the last full year for which figures are available. Preliminary figures for 2005 show that the contribution by renewable energy sources to gross electricity consumption has increased to 6.8% and the expectation for 2006 is that it will be over 8%.
ESB Customer Supply estimates that total purchases under the AER programme in 2005 were approximately fifty million euro.
