Question 95: To ask the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if he has held discussions with the management of the ESB in relation to media reports of a possible ESB takeover of a company (details supplied); his present views on measures to promote competition in the electricity market here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. There is no such proposal on the table.
The Green Paper on Energy Policy has articulated the need to enhance competition in the electricity market as an immediate priority. Structural change to deliver meaningful competition and reduction of market power in generation are clearly signalled as key objectives. The strategies to deliver this are being developed in the context of the consultation process to inform the White Paper.
