Question 531: To ask the Minister for Transport the reasons for failing to fill the vacancies that have existed for some time on the board of CIE and on the board of Iarnród Éireann; if he will redress the regional imbalance in filling such vacancies; and if the west of Ireland could be allowed representation on such boards by filling the vacancies which exist by nominations from within the region. Section 6 of the Transport Act 1950 and the Worker Participation (State Enterprises) Order 1980 governs the appointment of members of the Board of CIÉ and provide that the CIÉ Board shall be comprised of 12 Directors of which 4 are required to be Worker Directors. The filling of one vacancy on the CIÉ Board is under consideration.

The position in relation to Iarnród Éireann is that the appointment of members to the Board is a matter for the Chairman of CIÉ, subject to my consent, in accordance with Section 11 of the Transport (Re-Organisation of Córas Iompair Éireann) Act 1986. There are currently no vacancies on the Board of Iarnród Éireann.
