Question 171: To ask the Minister for Education and Science if her Department negotiates for the extension of catchment districts of existing secondary schools following the closure of a school in order that pupils in the catchment will not find that they are disadvantaged in terms of access to school places; and the provisions which have been made in respect of the catchment of a school (details supplied) in Dublin 5. When there is sufficient accommodation in the neighbourhood of a closing school, there is no necessity for the Department to re-draw a catchment area. In the case in question, the Department is satisfied that there are sufficient post primary pupil places in the area concerned to meet the demand presenting.
Generally, a closing school assists its residue of pupils in finding alternative places. Contact can also be made with the Department for this purpose if individual pupils are experiencing difficulties.
