Question 1451: To ask the Minister for Defence the present strength of the Defence Forces; the number of women in the Defence Forces; the number of new recruits recruited in the past year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29388/06]

The strength of the Permanent Defence Force, as of 31st August 2006, was 10,382 personnel, of whom 545 were women. In the year up to 1st September 2006, a total of 324 recruits have been inducted to the Permanent Defence Force.

The strength of the Reserve Defence Force (Army Reserve and Naval Service Reserve) as of 30th June 2006 (the last date for which composite figures are currently available) was 9,568, of whom 2,500 were women.
