Question 234: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government the measures which are in place to regulate the keeping of exotic animals, their living conditions and methods of transport, in particular in relation to large circus animals; if there are plans to introduce new legislation in this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Protection of Animals Acts, which are the responsibility of the Minister for Agriculture and Food, deal with issues of animal welfare. My Department is represented on an Interdepartmental Working Group on the Keeping of Exotic Species which was established by the Department of Agriculture and Food a number of years ago.
