Question 516: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on whether the current provisions of the Employment Equality Act 1998 are adequate to guard against all cases of discrimination against migrant workers; and if the Act should be amended to prohibit discrimination on the basis of immigration status and on the basis of national origin. Migrant workers are protected from discrimination under the Employment Equality Acts 1998 and 2004. The Acts already provide comprehensive protection against discrimination on the grounds of race, colour, nationality or ethnic or national origins to all employees, including migrant workers, in relation to access to employment, conditions of employment, equal pay for work of equal value, training, promotion and work experience. Therefore I do not consider it necessary to amend the Acts along the lines proposed by the Deputy.
