Question 402: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if an area closed circuit television scheme will be provided in the Finglas area as part of the service to be delivered from the new Finglas Garda station, in view of the fact that approval for such a scheme was given several years ago; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I have been informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources, including personnel, that the new Garda Station planned for Finglas will provide monitoring facilities for the town centre CCTV system. Suitable accommodation has been included in the brief of requirements for the new station.

As the Deputy is aware, a key issue to be addressed in the installation of the Finglas Town Centre CCTV system is the provision of suitable accommodation to house the monitoring equipment. It was initially hoped that this could be accommodated in Finglas Garda station. However, this station is not of an acceptable standard and I have already stated that immediate priority is being given to providing a new Garda station there.

I am advised that the Office of Public Works are currently in negotiations with the owners of a premises with a view to leasing the necessary accommodation for the monitoring of the CCTV cameras in Finglas until such time as the proposed new Station is built.

I have been informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources, that the present CCTV system, to which the Gardaí have access in the existing Ballymun Garda station, entails a monitoring facility of three cameras operated by Dublin City Council. It is expected that this facility will again be provided in the new station.
