Question 151: To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children her views on the ongoing failure to fill the post of chief pharmacist in her Department; her views on the fact that the failure to fill this post leaves a serious vacuum at the heart of decision making on health policy, including public health protection and patient safety; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The post of chief pharmacist at the Department of Health and Children is currently vacant following the retirement of the former chief pharmacist after many years of service. However, in recognition of its importance in the Department's policy making function, including public health protection and patient safety, the post of chief pharmacist has been filled in an acting capacity pending the restructuring of the Department. The duties of the post are currently being finalised and we hope to be in a position to advertise it as soon as possible. In the interim, the services of the former chief pharmacist continue to be available to my Department in an advisory capacity.
