Question 192: To ask the Minister for Transport if his attention has been drawn to a recent survey by Dublin Bus where it was found that traffic congestion is costing the company €49 million per year and that average speed had decreased to 12.7 kilometres per hour; the way in which he intends to assist Dublin Bus deal with this problem in the short term; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am aware that consultants have carried out a study of the cost of congestion for Dublin Bus. The impact of congestion and other factors on the cost base of Dublin Bus are the subject of ongoing discussions between my Department and the company. In this context, I have recently granted Dublin Bus an average 4% increase in bus fares, together with an increase of 5% in Exchequer subvention for 2006. This is in addition to the significant Exchequer investment in bus priority measures in recent years and the planned further investment in such measures contained in Transport 21.
