Question 584: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if the design and construction of the port tunnel has taken account of the recommendations of the report on the 1999 fire in the Mont Blanc tunnel and other similar reports; the person who will be responsible for the control of fire in the tunnel; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department has no function in relation to the design or construction of the Dublin Port tunnel and consequently is not appropriately placed to respond to this aspect of the question. Under section 10 of the Fire Services Act 1981, a fire authority is required to make provision for the prompt and efficient extinguishing of fires in buildings and other places of all kinds in its functional area and for the protection and rescue of persons and property from injury by fire.
