Question 671: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if he will extend the community warden scheme operated by a number of local authorities and due to conclude on 31 January 2006; his views on the ongoing and increased need for the continuation of this scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. There are five pilot local authorities operating the community warden service, Naas Town Council, Galway City Council, Galway County Council, Leitrim County Council and Wexford County Council. Following an independent review and evaluation of the pilot service in 2004, I decided that grant assistance of the pilots should continue for one more year. The question of the continuation and-or extension of the scheme will be definitively addressed following further examination of relevant staffing and other issues.
