The building at No. 16 Moore Street has been attributed special historical interest as the location of the final headquarters of the leaders of the 1916 Rising, and the building where the decision to surrender was made.

Because of its significant historical and cultural interest, in accordance with the provisions of section 53 of the Planning and Development Act 2000 I recommended on 25 August 2005 to Dublin City Council that the building should be added to the Record of Protected Structures, RPS.

I am aware that the council is urgently examining the inclusion of the building in its RPS. In the interim I understand that the city council has arranged for emergency works to be carried out to secure the building temporarily and make it watertight while its future is being decided. I am anxious that the necessary studies be finalised as soon as possible by the council, so that an informed decision can be made about the building.

I have not met with Dublin City Council or the owner in respect of No. 16 Moore Street. However, an officer of my Department did accompany Dublin City Council and its advisers in their inspection of the interior of the building on 25 August 2005.
