Question 1362: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the serious concerns among persons in the Clara area of County Offaly regarding the decision to close the fire station in Clara; if, in view of the population of 4,000 in the area and the serious safety implications of leaving the people of the area without a fire station, the decision will be reviewed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am aware of local concerns regarding the proposed closure of Clara fire station and I have previously replied to correspondence on this matter.

Under section 10 of the Fire Services Act 1981, a fire authority, in this instance Offaly County Council, is required to make provision for the delivery of fire services in its functional area including establishing and maintaining a fire brigade, providing premises and making such other provision as it considers necessary or desirable. It is, therefore, primarily a matter for Offaly County Council to consider the fire fighting arrangements appropriate to enable it to meet its statutory responsibilities as set out in the Fire Services Act 1981.
