Ireland ratified the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, CAT, on 11 April 2002 and it entered into force for Ireland on 11 May 2002. At the time of ratification, Ireland made declarations recognising the competence of the Committee against Torture set up pursuant to the provisions of the convention to receive and consider communications from other states parties thereto under article 21 of the convention, and to receive and consider individual communications under article 22 of the convention.

To date, no such communications have been brought to the attention of Ireland by the committee. Further information on Ireland and the convention is available on the website of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
