Question 37: To ask the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if he will report to Dáil Éireann on the current position with regard to the proposed EU directive on ferries; when it is expected to come into operation; the implications of the directive for the current industrial dispute at Irish Ferries; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I understand that the Deputy is referring to a suggestion that a proposal is being developed for a European Community directive dealing with the employment of officers and ratings on ferries and that the proposal would deal with the nationality of these seafarers. The Department is not aware of any such proposal.
