Question 292: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the number of drink driving breath checks carried out in 2004 fell by 10% compared with the figure for 2003; if he has been informed of the reason for this reduction; if he is considering introducing measures to reverse this reduction; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am informed by the Garda authorities that the 2004 annual report of the medical bureau of road safety, which comes under the aegis of the Minister for Transport, is not yet available and accordingly a comparison between the number of drink driving breath checks carried out in 2003 and 2004 is not possible at this stage. I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Commissioner continues to attach a very high importance to the detection of drink driving in the context of the Government road safety strategy.
