Question 613: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will consider the introduction of mental health courts that would provide an alternative to the existing courts system for those suffering from mental illness; the likely cost of such a measure; and if he will make a statement on the matter. There are no plans at present to introduce mental health courts. However, the Criminal Law (Insanity) Bill at present before the House, having been passed by the Seanad, provides for reform of the law on insanity as regards a range of criminal law matters. The Law Reform Commission is engaged in a consultation process on civil law in relation to legal capacity and I shall consider their recommendations when a final report is published. Furthermore, I understand that the Courts Service is carrying out a comprehensive review of wardship law and practice.
