Question 137: To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children if he will identify the committee of An Bord Altranais which recommended dropping the requirement of having a general nursing qualification prior to a person's qualifying as a public health nurse; and the nature of the involvement with stakeholders such as nursing union representatives prior to the taking of this decision. The issue raised by the Deputy is a matter for An Bord Altranais, the statutory body charged with the regulation of the nursing and midwifery professions, including the setting of requirements and standards in relation to the education programmes for registration. Membership of the board is representative of all divisions of the register of nurses. I understand, however, that the board decided at a recent meeting to establish a consultation process in respect of the matter raised.
