Question 85: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government when his Department received the study prepared by the Health Research Board on the health implications of waste incineration; when he intends to publish his response to the study, which has been promised on a number of occasions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The Health Research Board study on the effects of landfill and incineration was published in 2003. My Department, together with the Department of Health and Children and the Environmental Protection Agency, has been considering this report with a view to agreeing on a response to its findings. I accept that this process has taken longer than originally anticipated, due primarily to the need also to consider a more recently published UK government report on a review of environmental and health effects of waste management.

Consideration of the issues has been concluded by the bodies concerned and an agreed draft response has been prepared, which I intend to publish shortly.
