An application for a certificate of naturalisation from the person referred to by the Deputy was received in the citizenship section of my Department on 2 April 2003. The application has reached the final stages of processing and it will be submitted to me for a decision in the coming weeks. I will inform both the Deputy and the applicant as soon as I have reached a decision in the matter.

Question 162: To ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the basis for refusal of naturalisation in the case of a person (details supplied) in County Kildare who has been in insurable employment in this country for more than five years; in view of the fact that they came to Ireland in 1997, but was not allowed to work until 1999 and has been in continuous employment ever since; and if he will make a statement on the matter. An application for a certificate of naturalisation was received from the person referred to by the Deputy on 2 November 2002. The application was submitted to me for a decision in February 2005, and I decided not to grant a certificate of naturalisation. The person concerned was informed in writing of my decision and the reasons therefor on 17 February 2005.
