Question 57: To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children the policy which is applied by a health board in cases in which a health board psychiatrist refuses to continue to treat a person to ensure that the patient is offered ongoing care with another doctor; and if she will make a statement on the matter. It is the responsibility of health service providers to ensure that appropriate care and treatment is provided to any person suffering mental illness. Where it is not possible for a particular psychiatrist to continue to provide such care and treatment for a patient, the patient is referred to another psychiatrist within the same catchment area.
