Question 217: To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children the progress made in the appointment of accident and emergency consultants to the former midland health board area; the number of such specialists appointed; and the way in which these consultants are deployed to give cover to each of the accident and emergency facilities in the area, reflecting the case load at each facility. The Health Act 2004 provided for the Health Service Executive, which was established on 1 January 2005. Under the Act, the executive has the responsibility to manage and deliver, or arrange to be delivered on its behalf, health and personal social services. This includes responsibility for the appointment and deployment of accident and emergency consultants. As the question relates to the position in the former midland health board, my Department has requested the chief officer for the executive's midland area to investigate the matter raised and to reply directly to the Deputy.
