Question 36: To ask the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of IDA-supported firms which set up in Ireland in 2004; the number of existing IDA-supported firms which increased the number of Irish workers they employ; the number of such increase; the location and number of new jobs created in each firm; the proportion of these new start-ups which were located in the BMW region; and if he will make a statement on the matter. IDA Ireland is the agency with statutory responsibility for the attraction of foreign direct investment to Ireland and its regions. IDA Ireland indicated in its end of year statement for 2004 that it was the best year since 2000 in terms of the quality, depth and value of the investment decisions won and the estimated 10,800 new jobs created. However, more precise data on job creation is compiled from an annual employment survey carried out by Forfás and final figures for 2004 will not be available until mid-2005. According to the 2003 survey, which was published in mid-2004, 21 new greenfield projects supported by IDA Ireland started operations during the year, of which one third were in the BMW region. The survey also indicates that 426 existing companies created 8,673 new jobs. Employment data in relation to individual companies is provided on a confidential basis for survey purposes only.
