Question 540: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government the extent to which road or bridge realignments and improvements are likely to be approved by his Department in the current year, having regard to the various proposals submitted by the relevant authorities for his consideration; and if he will make a statement on the matter. In 2005, the total allocation for non-national roads from my Department is €495.27 million and grant allocations were notified to all authorities on 31 January. Of the total funds available, a sum of almost €392 million has been allocated to local authorities for improvement works.
Grants for improvement works are allocated under a number of different grant categories. Under some of these, local authorities are invited to submit specific proposals for consideration and the initial selection of projects to be submitted is a matter for the relevant local authority. In the remaining categories, the selection of works to be funded is entirely a matter for the relevant local authority.
