Since the commencement of the asbestos management programme in schools in 1999, almost 2,800 out of approximately 4,000 primary and post-primary schools have been surveyed by the Office of Public Works to determine the location, type, form and condition of any asbestos materials present. Works identified as necessary, have either been completed, are in hands or are programmed over the coming months.

The Office of Public Works will continue to carry out surveys until all the remaining schools have been examined and arrangements for the management of any materials identified will be put in hands as soon as possible thereafter.
